Barriers to the Adoption of Modular Construction in Portugal: An Interpretive Structural Modeling Approach

Modular construction is the most advanced method of off-site available, generating fully-fitted modules with up to 80% work completed in a controlled environment prior their transportation and installation on-site. The adoption modular (AMC) has increased several countries worldwide. However, smaller markets, rates remain low, industry still heavily reliant on traditional labor-intensive methods. main research question for this study is: What are barriers (including root barriers) Portugal? methodology used was mixed methods (MMR) approach, trying understand if there any specificities Portuguese (European Union) markets compared more well-documented North American Asian markets. First, literature review followed by survey were prioritize list 15 critical AMC. results interrelations between analyzed through an interpretive structural modeling (ISM) approach impact matrix cross-reference multiplication applied classification (MICMAC) analysis. combined analyses show that low levels R&D, lack accredited organizations certify quality manufactured components industry’s unwillingness innovate.
